What should I do for movement if I get sick or injured and need a few weeks to recover?
Sing it with me now people. R - E - S - T - U - P - C ? Wait... Remove the C, unless it's vitamin C!
Seriously y’all, REST. If you find yourself dragging I think that is a message from the body to REST. Slow things down. Get more sleep. Bring more consciousness to your diet. If alcohol is in your routine, consider reducing consumption. If sugar is a major food group, consider some healthy options.
After getting serious about your rest, some light movement can bring wonders to recovery. Stretching is your friend. Yoga and meditation is a magic cure when you’re not feeling your best.
I’ve created an easy to remember warmup that I use as a skeleton for all of my workouts. If you find yourself in an injured / recovery period, start with THE WARMUP and see how you feel. If that feels alright maybe you continue on with part of a STEAM class or a brisk walk outside. As a part of our new STEAM online membership site we have beginner classes that would be a great place to revisit if you want some light movement.
Side note, if you are experiencing pain to the level that you think you need to take some time off of movement it’s time to consult with a medical professional. A doctor or physical therapist can bring wonders to your peace of mind.
So if you are feeling down, REST then MOVE and REPEAT.
